Luna's Story

calendar_todayMarch 15, 2025schedule5 min read

Found shivering under a discarded pallet during a November storm, Luna was barely 4 weeks old. Her journey from a fragile kitten to the queen of her new sun-filled home is a testament to the power of a single rescue act.

It was a Thursday night in late November when our volunteer Maria spotted a tiny shape huddled beneath a discarded shipping pallet behind the old textile factory on Meridian Street. The rain had been falling hard for two hours. What she found was Luna — a calico kitten no older than four weeks, soaking wet, eyes barely open, and far too cold to cry.

A race against time

Luna was rushed to our emergency foster coordinator, where she was dried off, warmed with a heat pad, and fed kitten milk replacer every two hours through the night. Her temperature was dangerously low. For the first 48 hours, it was touch and go. Our vet partner Dr. Elena Ramirez stayed up through the night monitoring her breathing and hydration.

By the end of the first week, Luna had gained 40 grams and started responding to her foster mom's voice. By week two, she was demanding meals loudly and on schedule. The veterinary team described her recovery as remarkable — a testament to both her own resilience and the round-the-clock care she received.

We captured Luna's journey — from her first wobbly steps to her confident exploration of her foster home. This video shows what a difference a rescue can make.

Finding her forever home

At twelve weeks old, Luna was healthy, vaccinated, microchipped, and overflowing with personality. We received over thirty adoption applications in the first 24 hours after posting her profile. After careful screening, she was matched with the Okafor family — a couple with two older children and a gentle senior dog named Biscuit. The first meeting was captured on video: Luna walked straight up to Biscuit, touched noses with him, and began grooming his ear.

Today, Luna is the uncontested ruler of the Okafor household. She sleeps on the highest shelf, supervises cooking from the kitchen counter, and greets every guest at the front door. Mrs. Okafor sends us a photo every month. "She isn't a cat," she wrote recently. "She is a force of nature in a small striped coat."
